Church of the Brethren
Church of the Brethren's Global Mission and Service in action

"That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
—2 Corinthians 5:19-20

 Global Mission Prayer Guide
July 23, 2018

In the prayers for this week from Global Mission and Service Office, we lift up:

Iraqi Kurdistan

The Church of the Brethren Office of Peacebuilding and Policy, along with Christian Peacemaker Teams, requests prayer for 400-450 civilians (men, women, and children) who are trapped by constant, heavy shelling in the Pishdar District of Iraqi Kurdistan. The bombing operation is an action of the Turkish air force against the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party). The civilians live and work in the area as farmers and shepherds and cannot escape to safety for fear of being targeted. Surrounding fields have been set on fire by the bombing.

Pray for an end to the bombing so the civilians can evacuate. Pray for a lasting peace in the region.

Take action to help allow the civilians to evacuate.

United States

Pray for members of Brethren Volunteer Service Unit #319 as they begin two and a half weeks of orientation this Sunday at Camp Colorado, a Church of the Brethren camp owned by the Western Plains District. The volunteers will spend their time building community, discerning their project sites for the next one to two years, serving at the camp and in Denver, and discussing topics such as vocation, peace, and identity and privilege.

Gaza, Palestine

Pray for a lasting end to the cycles of retaliatory violence between Israeli and Hamas forces in Gaza. Israeli forces began recent attacks against Hamas members and Palestinian protesters, killing four, after a Palestinian gunman killed an Israeli soldier. He was the first Israeli military fatality in the area since 2014; more than 140 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since March 30, when Palestinians began weekly protests to demand their right to return to the homes and the land their families were expelled from 70 years ago. While many of the protesters have been nonviolent, some have thrown items and floated flaming kites into southern Israel.

A fragile ceasefire is currently in place, but experts fear it won’t last long and that a larger-scale conflict could break out. Tensions are continually high in the Gaza area, where more than two million Palestinians live in an area the size of Detroit with movement of goods and people restricted by both Israel and Egypt.

Pray for sustainable solutions that bring peace and justice to all involved.
