Church of the Brethren

Church of the Brethren's Global Mission and Service in action

"That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
—2 Corinthians 5:19-20

Rejoice that Rebecca Dali was named recipient of the 2017 SÚrgio Vieira de Mello Humanitarian Award, which is presented through the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). The award recognizes Dali’s tireless efforts for especially vulnerable victims of Boko Haram violence, such as widows, orphans, and former abductees. Through the organization Center for Caring Empowerment and Peace Initiative (CCEPI), she has provided these victims with means of livelihood, reintegration, and reconciliation.

Rebecca is a leader in Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), and her husband Samuel previously served as EYN’s president. CCEPI is a vital partner in the Church of the Brethren’s Nigeria Crisis Response.

Read more about the award as well as a 2015 interview with Rebecca.

Pray for the annual conference of Eglise des Freres d’ Haiti, the Church of the Brethren in Haiti, convening this week in Croix-des-Bouquets. Inspired by their Brethren sisters and brothers in Nigeria, the Haitian church has chosen to focus its conference on the persecution and the victory of faith of EYN, using 1 John 5:4 as the conference’s theme Scripture.

Pray that the conference worship and fellowship uplift and strengthen Haitian Brethren to continue serving God and neighbor. Pray for wisdom and energy for the church’s leaders and pastors in the year ahead.

Sierra Leone

Lift into God’s comfort all those affected by a large mudslide on the outskirts of capital city Freetown. The mudslide buried homes while many residents were still sleeping. The number of casualties is not yet known, but the sources initially report 200-300 deaths. Thousands have been left homeless from the mudslide and resulting flooding.

United States

Pray for all those hurt—physically, emotionally, spiritually—by the Charlottesville, Va., white supremacy rally and ensuing violence. Lord have mercy on us, for the sins of racism and hatred that live in our hearts, words, actions, and inactions. Pray that we be pushed to face the ingrained injustice in our schools, churches, societies, and institutions.
