Church of the Brethren

Church of the Brethren's Global Mission and Service in action

"That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
—2 Corinthians 5:19-20

 Global Mission Prayer Guide
August 21, 2017

In the prayers for this week from Global Mission and Service Office, we lift up:

Nigeria

Pray for health and safety for participants in the rebuilding workcamp of Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, Church of the Brethren in Nigeria). EYN members, together with three United States Brethren volunteers, are working on church and medical clinic buildings in northeast Nigeria.

The Global Mission and Service office is looking for volunteers to serve at a rebuilding workcamp in January. Workcamps provide the chance to get to know Nigerian sisters and brothers while working alongside them to further the rebuilding effort. Specific dates are not yet set, but basic information is available here.

Haiti

Give thanks for Global Mission worker Ilexene Alphonse and for his more than six years of dedicated service to Eglise des Freres d’Haiti, the Church of the Brethren in Haiti. Working together with his wife, Michaela, Ilexene has taken leadership with almost all facets of the church’s work, from disaster relief to church development, and has mostly recently served as interim general secretary.

Ilexene will soon end his full-time service with the Haitian church to serve as interim pastor of Eglise des Freres Haitiens in Miami, Fla. Pray for blessings on Ilexene and Michaela as they adjust to their new lives and pastoral roles in Miami.

Pray for Eglise des Freres d’Haiti as it adjusts during this time of transition. Pray for wisdom and energy for new leaders as they are called to serve the church. May God bless the Haitian church with strength to continue serving God and neighbor.

South Sudan

Pray for Global Mission worker Athanasus Ungang, who has returned to the Brethren Peace Center in Torit, following home leave in the United States. Pray for health and safety as he continues to meet human need and serve as a witness for peace in a country still rife with armed conflict. Pray for the millions of South Sudanese victimized by violence and severe hunger. Pray for peace to break through.
