Church of the Brethren

Church of the Brethren's Global Mission and Service in action

"That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
—2 Corinthians 5:19-20

 Global Mission Prayer Guide
September 11, 2017

In the prayers for this week from Global Mission and Service Office, we lift up:

Pray for the Asamblea, or annual conference, of Iglesia de los Hermanos Una Luz En Las Naciones (the Church of the Brethren in Spain). Approximately 120 people are expected to attend the conference in the city of Gijón. The conference theme is “Harvesting to Bless,” based on Psalm 126:6.

Along with Brethren from the United States, Alexandre Gonçalves, of the Brazilian Church of the Brethren (Igreja da Irmandade-Brasil), will attend the conference and preach one of the sermons.

Pray for a renewing of spirits as Brethren gather together for worship and fellowship. Pray for the Holy Spirit's wisdom and guidance as participants make decisions for the life of the Spanish church.

Dominican Republic

Pray for a week of service outreach by leaders from Iglesia de los Hermanos (the Church of the Brethren in the Dominican Republic), together with a group of six volunteers from Lancaster (Pa.) Church of the Brethren. The group will serve at one of the congregations in Los Cerros de Chalona, a rural area outside of San Juan. Activities include programs for children, youth, and the elderly; a marriage workshop; and visits throughout the community. Pray for blessing and enrichment for all involved.

North America

Lift into God's care and comfort all those whose lives have been torn apart by recent natural disasters.

The National Interagency Fire Center reports 123 large wildland fires burning across the United States, resulting in approximately two million acres currently on fire across western states. Pray for people dealing with displacement, loss of property, and health concerns from smoke-filled air. Pray for the more than 25,000 responders risking their lives to contain the fires.

The death toll has risen to 90 from the strongest earthquake to hit Mexico in a century. The states of Oaxaca and Chiapas were the hardest hit. Aftershocks continue to cause damage, and medical supplies are scarce. Pray for the hundreds of people who are injured and those who are mourning the deaths of family and friends. Pray for hope and encouragement, as well as physical relief, where homes and entire towns have been destroyed.

Pray for everyone affected by the string of hurricanes in the southern United States and the Caribbean. In addition to Texas and Florida, remember people in places like Barbuda and Saint Martin, Caribbean islands that had up to 95 percent of all buildings destroyed. In Saint Martin, shortages of food, water, and other supplies along with a lack of electricity and phone communication has led to widespread looting and insecurity.
