Church of the Brethren
Church of the Brethren's Global Mission and Service in action

"That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
—2 Corinthians 5:19-20

 Global Mission Prayer Guide
October 16, 2017

In the prayers for this week from Global Mission and Service Office, we lift up:

United States

Pray for the two teams of Children's Disaster Services (CDS) volunteers serving in Sonoma County, Calif., where they are assisting children and families who have had to evacuate their homes due to the wildfires in northern California.

Pray for the ongoing CDS response in Las Vegas, Nev., working at a Family Assistance Center at the request of the Red Cross. A third group of specially trained Critical Response Caregiving volunteers replaced the previous two teams who had been serving children and families affected by the October 1 mass shooting.

Pray for the children affected by the terrors of flame and of violence. Pray for strength and energy for the volunteers who help the children try to process their experiences.

Leaders from Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN, Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) request prayer for EYN members who were injured in a car accident over the weekend. Pray that God may embrace the injured with strength and healing.

Pray for the ongoing instability in northeast Nigeria as Boko Haram militants continue attacks. Last week the group attempted to take over the town of Gwoza, leading to a deadly battle with the Nigerian military. Government forces were able to hold off the group, but the attack caused aid workers to flee the town.

Pray for an end to the region's violence. Pray that Nigerians can live without fear. Pray for a peace that lasts.

May God surround the city of Mogadishu with comfort and solace after a truck bombing that has taken at least 320 lives and injured hundreds more. The scope of the disaster was exacerbated when the explosion ignited a nearby fuel tanker. Intense heat from the explosion left many bodies unrecognizable, meaning it will be hard to determine the exact death toll. Somali government workers buried at least 150 bodies that could not be identified. The explosion in the capital city's main thoroughfare also demolished numerous buildings.

Al-Shabaab, a Somali-based affiliate of al-Qaida, has claimed responsibility for the attack, which is the worst that Somalia has seen in decades of violence from the militant group.

Pray for those who suffer the intense pain of grief, loss, or injury. Pray for peace in a country plagued by violence for so long.

Pray for Global Mission and Service executive director Jay Wittmeyer as he travels in Tanzania. Jay serves on the board of directors for Heifer International, and he and other board members are visiting Heifer's new development projects in Tanzania. Pray for safety and discovery.
