The statue of Fray Anton de Montesinos

The monument to Fray Anton de Montesinos, the Catholic Dominican friar who preached a historic sermon in 1511 denouncing the Spanish authorities' human rights abuses. The Historic Peace Church conference visited the monument as part of its alternative tour of colonial Santo Domingo, remembering the genocide and slavery that began after Columbus' landing on the island in 1492.
